Style / Profile

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Suction is one of a new generation of deviant electro labels emerging the world over. With its roots firmly in electro-pop and industrial-dance music of the early '80s, Suction strips these influences right down, and develops a sparse, yet highly melodic, robotic groove that is often experimental, yet always funky and accessible. Suction attempts to steer clear of much of the current electronic sound - they state that their aim is to create music which is well-crafted and timeless. Suction is dedicated to analog synthesis - developing sounds which have proven the test of time - avoiding riding the latest digital "click and pop" wave.

Whilst listening is obviously the only way to get a handle on the Suction sound, comparisons can inevitably be made to such outfits as I-F and Bochum Welt, as well as the older grooves of Depeche Mode and Cybotron.

History

The label was set up in early 1997 by artists Lowfish (Gregory de Rocher) and Solvent (Jason Amm). Both coming from a background of industrial electronics and synthetic pop, they began releasing projects for Suction with an untitled Lowfish/Solvent split 12". By the second release, the label expanded to include other artists (detailed below), and was soon releasing full-lengths by its two resident robots. More recently, Suction has unleashed a series of retrospective releases, 'Snow Robots', featuring a remix 12" with the likes of Detroit's Adult. and Rome's Mat-101, along with two CDs compiling their now out-of-print vinyl back catalog.

Players / Related Projects

As well as the two founders described above, Suction has played host to a number of guests over the years, including D'Arcangelo (Italian duo known for earlier releases on Rephlex), David Kristian (records for Alien8 & Worm Interface), and Brioche Kretzaal (from our favourite Manchester based lunatics, V/VM).

Apart from the Suction label, its resident robots Solvent & Lowfish have also contributed music to a diverse selection of international labels, including Bad Jazz (London), Morr Music (Berlin), and City.Centre.Offices (Manchester).
